        Trash & Recycling

The Association retains the services of a trash collection and recycling company.  Currently, the Cluster's contractor is Con-Serv Industries (CSI).  The trash and recyclables collections schedule is:
  •   TRASH COLLECTION - Mondays and Thursdays
  •   RECYCLABLES COLLECTION - Wednesdays

There will be no pick-ups when a collection day falls on the 4th of July, Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, or New Years Day.  Hold your trash or recyclables until the next scheduled pick-up day.  For further information on this year's schedule, .  In addition, CSI reserves the right to cancel collection services on days or in areas in which they deem the roads to be unsafe because of accumulation of snow or ice.  There will be no makeup days; just hold your trash and recyclables until the next regularly scheduled pickup day.

Trash should be placed at the curb by 6 am on collection days.  Trash set out for collection can include general household trash and garbage, and small furniture and household equipment.  The following items will not be collected: dead animals, oil, paint, batteries, construction material, manure, tree stumps, mulch, sod, dirt, stone, rocks, concrete, bricks, poisons, acids, caustics, explosives or other dangerous material.  These items can be taken directly by homeowners to the County Transfer Station at 4618 West Ox Road, south of Route 50.  See the county website for a complete list of disposable items and instructions for their disposal:  http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/dpwes/trash/dispaccept-index.htm.   See also the web page that details what is considered hazardous waste and gives instructions for its disposal.

Special arrangements must be made for deposal of large furniture, mattresses and other large household items.  These will be picked up at no extra charge once arrangements have been made with CSI by calling them at 703-674-1701.

"White goods" such as stoves, refrigerators, washers, dryers, hot water tanks, and other large, bulky metal goods can also be picked up by special arrangements with CSI, but in these cases, an additional fee, paid by credit card in advance, will be charged to the homeowner.

Residents should put out trash and garbage for collection in covered trash barrels in order to keep wild or domesticated animals and birds from getting into the garbage and scattering it on the sidewalk or parking area.  You may set out unprotected heavy-duty plastic trash bags as long as they contain absolutely no food scraps or food containers with food residue.  Make certain the bags are securely tied so their contents will not spill out during collection.

Recyclable materials include glass bottles and jars, plastic bottles, metal food and beverage cans, newspapers and magazines, brush and yard debris.  All other materials are not recyclable and must be disposed of in the regular household trash.  Plastic grocery bags are not recyclable for Cluster pickup, but may be recycled by returning them to any area's grocery stores.  Recyclables should be set out at the curb by 6 am on collection days.  Glass, plastic, and metal items can be placed out in a recycling bin or in clear plastic bags.  Newspapers and magazines should be in a recycling bin, in a paper bag, or tied securely with twine.  Brush or tree trimmings must be cut into lengths no greater than four feet, and then tied into small bundles or bagged.  Grass clippings or yard debris should be bagged and set out with other recyclables on Wednesdays.

Reston Association covenants require that residents not set out trash or recyclables before the evening of the day preceding collection day.  Similarly, residents are to bring in their empty trash barrels and recycling containers by evening of collection day.

Residents should report any problems with trash collection and recycling to the CSI dispatcher at 703-674-1701.

This Year's Holiday Schedule

In 2008, there will be no trash on Thanksgiving, Christmas, or the following News Years Day.  In each case, hold all your trash until the following Monday pickup.

In January, Christmas trees will be picked up on regular trash runs as space permits.  All tinsel and ornaments should removed prior to collection.  Please do not discard your trees in the natural areas or any other location on the Association's common ground.
