House Colors

October 14, 2011

In June 1994, Reston Association approved a new palette of colors for house exteriors and front doors.  Additional colors were approved by the Design Review Board effective September 20, 2011.  The new colors are “Frontier,” “Golden Husk” and “Terra” (see table below).  In addition, “Cordovan Brown “was approved by DRB as a new front door color for the full light door and storm door.  It remains the standard color for trim sections.

Colors in this palette are the only ones authorized for use on townhouses in Hunters Green Cluster.  Each house’s color is registered with the Covenants Advisor at Reston Association.  Homeowners are entitled to repaint the exterior of their homes with their registered color (i.e. the same color) without any further requests or approval process.  Note: all siding must be painted the existing or new color at the same time.

If you wish to change your house color to a different one in the approved HGC  palette, you must first file a DRB application with the Covenants Advisor.  The only restriction is that you cannot select the same color(s) as those of your next door neighbors.  If you fail to go through the approval process and register your new color, your next door neighbors could conceivably apply for and register it for their own houses and you would be forced to repaint with a different color.

If you have questions regarding the DRB request process, or to find out what colors are currently registered for your house or your neighbors’ houses, contact Lucy Renault, Reston Association Covenants Advisor assigned to Hunters Green Cluster.  Lucy can be reached at 703.435.6527.

House Colors

The house colors below are available in “Cabot (OVT) Solid Color Acrylic Siding Stain.”  House colors are to be applied to wood siding, downspouts (but not gutters), wall vents and fences.  Your selected house color must also be used on any secondary doors (i.e. not the front entry door).

Secondary doors include any exterior laundry room entry or any exterior storage room door that may exist with your model.  It is also to be used on primary entry door trim when that door is set into a wood (instead of a brick) wall.

Door Colors

The "primary" entry (i.e. front) door will be painted using “MoorGlo Latex House and Trim” paint with one of the colors below, but selected in accordance with the matrix which follows the colors.

Any storm door covering the primary entry doors must be painted in the same color as the primary entry door itself.  DRB approved Cordovan Brown as an additional color for storm doors in connection with the new door standards (see “Door” standards section).  Please note Cordovan Brown is a Cabot color.

Trim Color

The trim color, “Cabot (OVT) Solid Color Acrylic Siding Stain – Cordovan Brown,” is to be applied to all fascia boards, gutters (but not downspouts), metal caps on common firewalls, flashing, metal railings, roof vents, attic fan housings, chimney caps and skylight window trim.  It is also to be used on primary entry door trim in those models in which the entry door is set into a brick (instead of a wood) wall.

House - Door Color Combinations

The choice of a house color limits the choice of a front door color.  Below is a matrix that shows which door colors can be used with each of the house colors.  The house colors are listed in the left-most column.  The remaining columns each represent a front door color.  The cross points in the matrix indicate which door colors can be used with which house colors.

Additional Information:

Cabot (OVT) Solid Color Acrylic Siding Stain can be obtained at “Vienna Paint and Decorating” at their Vienna, VA or Herndon, VA locations.  They have created an account for Hunters Green Cluster which lists the house color standards.  If needed, the contact names for the Vienna location are Mark Mutich, Manager, or Nick Scorza.  The contact at the Herndon location is Lee Cramer.  Hunters Green Cluster homeowners will receive a discounted price for the paint already calculated in the paint cost.  This arrangement was made in 1994 and is still in effect.

Cabot (OVT) Solid Color Acrylic Siding Stain can be identified by the color name.   Technical sources (800.877.8246) at Cabot confirmed they have phased out the paint number of the house colors.  In addition, they have removed “OVT” from the paint type.  For more information and to view the approved colors online please go to the Cabot website at: http://cabotstain.com/colors-and-finishes/families/Solids-Colors.html
